Barbara Fredrickson, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina (USA) has shown how an optimistic attitude towards life can help the brain fight negative feelings. This researcher found that certain exercises can be used to train the body to encourage and increase positive responses, creating a natural defense mechanism against stress and depression.

First of all, we should be aware that those thoughts on which we want to “declare war” are going to attack us. Whenever a negative thought populates our mind and we want to drive it away or deny it, this thought will try to haunt us again. Every thought triggers other thoughts of the same nature, and this creates a cognitive overload that is by no means helpful to us.

The thoughts that play out in our heads can affect our everyday lives and even our feelings and behaviors. It is important to understand the relationship between driving a negative thought away and reducing its negative consequences.
